Temporal lobe epilepsy in children: overview of clinical semiology.
نویسندگان
چکیده
Temporal lobe epilepsy in children has been less well studied compared to that seen in adults. Whereas hippocampal sclerosis is the most common etiology for the adult temporal lobe epilepsy syndromes, tumors and malformations of cortical development are more commonly seen in children. Differences in seizure semiology are also apparent. Temporal lobe epilepsy in very young infants may exhibit prominent motor manifestations reminiscent of extra-temporal seizures. These motor manifestations however decrease with increasing age and are less abundant in adults. Automatisms, which are commonly seen in temporal lobe epilepsy in all age groups, are simple at a younger age and become increasingly more complex and discrete with age. Several case studies, illustrated on the video are included in this review. They highlight the differences in temporal lobe seizure semiology between children and adults. SEIZURE SEMIOLOGY OF INFANTS AND YOUNG CHILDREN WITH LESIONAL EPILEPSY Ph.D. thesis
Budapest 2002 2 SUMMARY Epilepsy is a broad category of recurrent paroxysmal episodes of brain dysfunction manifested by stereotyped alterations in behavior. Seizure semiology describes the clinical features of such an episode supporting its precise classification. Proper knowledge and frequent use of seizure semiology can greatly help in the adequate categorization of epileptic seizures and us...

PURPOSE This study aimed to discuss the clinical features of seizure semiology and electroencephalography (EEG) in young children with lesional temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). METHOD Children with lesional TLE received presurgical evaluation for intractable epilepsy. They were followed up for more than one year after temporal lobectomy. We reviewed the medical history and video-EEG monitoring o...

متن کاملTemporal lobe epilepsy: clinical semiology and age at onset.
The objective of this study was to define the clinical semiology of seizures in temporal lobe epilepsy according to the age at onset. We analyzed 180 seizures from 50 patients with medial or neocortical temporal lobe epilepsy who underwent epilepsy surgery between 1997-2002, and achieved an Engel class I or II outcome. We classified the patients into two groups according to the age at the first...
متن کاملEmotion Processing in Patients with Early- and Late-Onset Temporal Lobe Epilepsy
Objective: Temporal Lobe Epilepsy (TLE) can contribute to various emotional symptoms by damaging the temporal lobe. This study aimed at investigating emotion processing in patients with early- and late-onset TLE compared to a healthy group. Methods: In this causal-comparative study, 60 patients with diagnosed TLE were compared to 60 healthy controls to identify emotion processing styles. The d...
